Why Every Author Should Consider Audible: Expert Tips from Jeremy Schreifels of Box 7 Media

In this episode of the Smart Publishing Impact Series, host Renée Lautermilch sits down with Jeremy Schreifels, audio expert and founder of Box 7 Media, to dive deep into the world of audiobooks. If you've ever wondered whether creating an audiobook is worth it—or what it actually takes to make one—this is your guide.

Meet the Audio Expert Behind the Mic

Jeremy Schreifels isn’t just a sound engineer—he’s a lifelong musician, seasoned producer, and the founder of Box 7 Media, where he helps authors and podcasters bring their voices to life. With over two decades of experience in the studio and on stage, he brings both technical mastery and deep respect for the power of the human voice.

“No one tells your story like you do,” Jeremy says. “That’s why I always encourage authors to narrate their own audiobooks whenever possible.”

Why Audible Still Dominates the Market

While there are a few options for audiobook distribution—like Spotify and Amazon Music—Audible continues to be the go-to. Much like how authors choose Amazon KDP for print publishing, Audible remains the largest and most recognized platform for audiobook listeners.

“It’s like Kleenex,” Jeremy explains. “People don’t say ‘I want an audiobook.’ They say ‘I want an Audible.’ That name recognition is huge.”

Authors can choose to publish exclusively through Audible via Amazon’s ACX platform or opt for non-exclusive distribution to sell elsewhere, including directly through their own websites.

Three Ways to Produce an Audiobook

There’s no one-size-fits-all path to creating an audiobook. Jeremy breaks it down into three primary methods:

  1. Narrate it yourself. This is his top recommendation for nonfiction authors, especially those writing business, self-development, or memoir books.

  2. Hire a professional voice actor. For those who aren’t comfortable narrating or have accessibility challenges.

  3. Use AI voice replication. A relatively new and imperfect option. Jeremy doesn’t recommend it, especially for authors wanting to build trust and connection with their audience.

Why Voice Matters: The Power of Authentic Narration

What sets a good audiobook apart? Authenticity.

Jeremy encourages authors to add bonus content during narration—extra stories, reflections, or behind-the-scenes moments that don’t exist in the print version. Not only does this enhance the listener’s experience, it also gives readers a reason to buy both formats.

“You can give them something your editor wouldn’t let you put in the print book,” Jeremy says. “Make it a richer experience.”

Audiobook Recording: It’s Not Just Reading Into a Mic

Many authors underestimate the technical demands of audiobook production. As Renée learned through her own failed attempt to DIY her first audiobook, it’s not as simple as plugging in a headset and hitting record.

Audible’s quality standards are strict. Files are screened by AI and human reviewers and must meet exacting decibel levels, clarity, and consistency. Editing out mouth noises, breath sounds, and volume fluctuations takes dozens of hours.

“The microphone never lies,” Jeremy quips. “It’s a perfect representation of how you actually sound—whether you like it or not.”

How Box 7 Media Supports Authors

Jeremy offers two options for working with authors:

  • Come to the studio in Minnesota, where everything is prepped and ready.

  • Bring the studio to you, by sourcing a local professional studio or traveling to a location where the author feels most comfortable.

Recording typically takes two days, followed by 45–60 hours of post-production editing and quality assurance. Once ready, Box 7 handles the upload and approval process via ACX—aiming to pass Audible’s checks on the first try.

Pro Tips for Recording Success

  • Prep like an athlete. Jeremy recommends walking daily for vocal endurance, staying hydrated, avoiding dairy, and using Throat Coat tea to soothe the voice.

  • Practice reading out loud. Even half a chapter a day builds stamina and helps authors identify tricky phrasing before stepping behind the mic.

  • Add video. Recording video during your session gives you valuable marketing content, especially if you plan to step into speaking engagements or keynotes.

A Final Word for Authors

You don’t need to release your audiobook at the same time as your print or eBook. In fact, launching it later can act as a powerful relaunch strategy—reintroducing your book to a new audience or giving existing readers a fresh way to engage.

“I didn’t publish my audiobook until two years after my print book,” Jeremy admits. “And I do this for a living. It’s okay to take your time.”
